How to Find the BPM of a Song

There are three quick ways to find a song's tempo:

  1. Drop the file in. The finder above listens to the whole song and gives you the BPM, with half and double time in case it counts the beat differently from you.
  2. Tap along. Hit the Tap button, or press T, on every beat for a few bars. It averages your taps.
  3. Count it. Count the beats for 15 seconds and multiply by 4. Thirty beats in 15 seconds is 120 BPM.

Most dance music sits on a whole number, so a reading of 127.9 is almost certainly 128. Songs played by a live band drift a little, and the finder gives you the tempo they hold for most of the song.

How to Find the Key of a Song

Drop the song into the finder. It measures how much of each of the 12 notes is played across the whole track, corrects for songs tuned away from the usual A = 440 Hz, and matches the result against all 24 major and minor keys. You get the key, its Camelot and Open Key codes, its relative key and the keys that mix well with it.

To check it by ear, hum the note that feels like home at the end of the chorus, then find it on a piano or keyboard app. If the song sounds bright and happy it's probably the major key; darker or sadder, the minor. That's also the choice key finders most often get wrong, because a major key and its relative minor use exactly the same notes.

What Is a Normal BPM?

BPM means beats per minute: how many times you'd tap your foot in a minute. Most popular music sits between 80 and 140 BPM. Typical ranges by genre:

GenreUsual BPM
Hip-hop and R&B80–100
Pop100–130
House120–130
Techno125–150
Trap130–170, often felt at half time
Dubstep140, felt at 70
Drum and bass160–180

Camelot Wheel: Which Keys Mix Well?

DJs use the Camelot wheel to mix songs that sound good together. Every key has a number and a letter (A for minor, B for major). Mix into the same number, one number up or down, or the other letter with the same number, and the keys won't clash. Here's every key with its Camelot and Open Key code:

How to Convert BPM to Milliseconds

Divide 60,000 by the BPM to get one beat in milliseconds: at 120 BPM, a beat is 500 ms. Halve it for an eighth note, halve it again for a sixteenth. Set delays and reverb pre-delay to these values and they lock to the groove. The finder above shows a full table, with dotted and triplet times, for your song's tempo.

Frequently asked questions

How do I find the BPM of a song?

Drop the song into the BPM and key finder above. It listens to the whole track and shows the tempo in beats per minute, plus half and double time. No file? Tap along with the Tap button, or press T, and it averages your taps.

How do I find the key of a song?

Drop the song into the finder. It works out which notes are played most across the whole track, matches them against the 24 major and minor keys, and shows the best match with its Camelot and Open Key codes.

How accurate is the BPM and key finder?

Tempo is usually spot on for songs with a steady beat. Key is harder: like every key finder, it sometimes picks the relative key (C major instead of A minor, which share the same notes), so it shows a confidence level and the next most likely key. Songs that change key or tempo get the one they spend longest in.

What is the Camelot wheel?

A chart DJs use for harmonic mixing. Each key gets a number from 1 to 12 and a letter, A for minor and B for major. Keys with the same number, or one number apart, mix smoothly, so 8A (A minor) works with 7A, 9A and 8B.

Why does it show half time and double time?

Tempo depends partly on how you feel the beat. A drum and bass track can be counted at 174 or 87 BPM, and both are right. If the main number feels too slow or too fast, go with half or double time.

What does relative key mean?

Every major key shares all its notes with one minor key, called its relative: C major and A minor, G major and E minor. They sound related and mix together well, which is also why key finders can mix them up.

Can I find the BPM and key of several songs at once?

Yes. Drop in as many songs as you like and they're analysed one after another. Click Copy results to paste every song's BPM and key into a playlist note or spreadsheet.

Is my music uploaded?

No. The finder analyses your songs inside your browser, so they never leave your device, and it works with unreleased tracks.
