Make a GIF for Discord

Discord has a different limit for each place a GIF can go. Tap Emoji or Sticker in the converter and it makes the right shape, then keeps shrinking the GIF until it fits. Limits from Discord's help pages, checked November 3, 2026:

Where the GIF goesMax file sizeDimensions
GIF posted in chat (no Nitro)20 MBAny
GIF posted in chat (Nitro Basic / Nitro)50 MB / 1 GBAny
Custom emoji256 KB128 × 128 px
Sticker512 KB320 × 320 px, up to 5 s
Animated profile banner (Nitro)10 MBAt least 680 × 240 px
Animated server banner (Boost Level 3)Not statedAt least 960 × 540 px (16:9)

Anyone can add animated emoji to a server, but using them takes Nitro or Nitro Basic, and so does an animated profile picture. For every other Discord limit, from server boosts to soundboard sounds, see Discord's file size limits.

Best GIF Settings: Width, Frame Rate and Length

GIF forWidthFrame rateLength
Reaction GIF for a chat320–480 px10–15 fps2–5 seconds
Discord emoji128 px square10–15 fpsUp to 3 seconds
Discord sticker320 px square10–15 fpsUp to 5 seconds
Screen recording or tutorial640–800 px10–15 fpsAs short as you can
Fast action (sport, gaming)480 px20–25 fps2–4 seconds

Why not 60 fps? A GIF stores each frame's delay in hundredths of a second, and browsers slow any delay under 2 hundredths (20 milliseconds) right down. That makes 50 fps the real maximum, and a GIF made at 60 fps plays slower than the video. The converter caps the frame rate for you, including when you speed a clip up.

Why not 4K? A GIF has no video compression, so a 4K GIF of a few seconds can run to hundreds of megabytes, and nowhere shows it at that size anyway. 480 to 800 pixels wide looks sharp in chats and on web pages.

Why GIFs Are So Big, and How to Shrink Yours

Video formats like MP4 only store what changes between frames, and they use millions of colors. A GIF can use only 256 colors per frame and was designed in the 1980s. That makes GIFs 5 to 10 times bigger than the same clip as an MP4.

This converter keeps them as small as a GIF can be:

  • One set of colors is picked for the whole clip, so the colors don't flicker between frames.
  • Pixels that don't change from one frame to the next aren't stored again, which makes still backgrounds, screen recordings and talking heads much smaller.
  • Frames that are exactly the same are merged into one longer frame.

If yours is still too big, lower the settings in this order: width first (halving it makes the GIF about a quarter of the size), then the frame rate, then the colors, then pick a shorter part. Or let the converter do it: tap Make it fit next to a size limit under your GIF.

Make a GIF From an iPhone or Android Video

The converter works in your phone's browser, so there's nothing to install. Tap the box and choose a video from your photos or gallery, then save the GIF or send it straight to a chat with Share.

iPhones record in HEVC (High Efficiency) by default. Safari plays HEVC on every iPhone, iPad and Mac, but Chrome and Firefox only do on some devices. If a video won't open, use Safari, or before you record set your iPhone's Camera > Formats to Most Compatible, which saves H.264 videos that open everywhere. Phone videos are big, so start at 320 or 480 pixels wide.

GIF vs WebP vs MP4

  • GIF plays and loops everywhere with no play button: chats, emoji, stickers, emails, forums and docs. That's why it's still the default for short loops.
  • Animated WebP is often smaller with more colors, but some apps and emails still don't play it.
  • MP4 is far smaller and sharper for anything longer than a few seconds. Many sites that show "GIFs" actually play MP4s. To work out how big a video will be, use the video file size calculator.

Is My Video Uploaded?

No. The video is read, cut into frames and turned into a GIF inside your browser, so it never leaves your device. That's also why there's no upload wait and no file size limit beyond what your device can handle. There's no watermark and no sign-up.

Frequently asked questions

How do I turn a video into a GIF?

Drop the video into the converter above, drag the two handles to pick the part you want, choose a width and frame rate, then click Make GIF and download it. It takes a few seconds for a short clip, and the video never leaves your device.

How do I make a GIF from an iPhone video?

Open this page in Safari on your iPhone, tap the box and choose the video from Photos, then make the GIF and tap Share or Download. iPhones record in HEVC, which Safari plays everywhere but some other browsers can't on every device. If a browser can't open the video, use Safari, or set Camera > Formats to Most Compatible before you record.

Can I make a GIF on Android?

Yes. Open the page in Chrome, tap the box and pick a video from your gallery. Phone videos are big, so start at 320 or 480 pixels wide and a few seconds long; that's plenty for chats and keeps the GIF small.

What frame rate should a GIF be?

10 to 15 fps is the usual choice: smooth enough for most clips and much smaller than 30 fps. Use 20 to 25 fps for fast motion. GIFs can't really go past 50 fps, because browsers slow down any frame shorter than 20 milliseconds, so a "60 fps GIF" plays slower than you meant.

Why is my GIF so big, and how do I make it smaller?

A GIF stores every frame as a picture with up to 256 colors, so size grows with width, frame rate and length. In that order, lower the width, the frame rate and the colors, or pick a shorter part. The converter does this for you: under the result, tap Make it fit next to a size limit and it shrinks the settings until the GIF fits.

How long can a GIF be?

There's no limit in the format, but GIFs get very big very fast, so most are 2 to 10 seconds. This converter makes GIFs up to 60 seconds. For anything longer, a short MP4 looks better at a fraction of the size.

How do I make a GIF for a Discord emoji or sticker?

Tap Emoji or Sticker under For Discord. An emoji has to be under 256 KB, so it's made 128 pixels square and a few seconds long. A sticker has to be exactly 320 × 320 pixels, under 512 KB and 5 seconds or less. Either way, the converter keeps shrinking it until it fits.

What is the GIF size limit on Discord?

Posting a GIF in chat follows the normal upload limit: 20 MB without Nitro, 50 MB with Nitro Basic and up to 1 GB with Nitro. Custom emoji must be under 256 KB and stickers under 512 KB. An animated profile picture needs Nitro.

Is GIF, WebP or MP4 better?

MP4 is far smaller and sharper for anything longer than a few seconds, and WebP is smaller than GIF too. GIF still wins where a file has to loop and play everywhere with no play button: chats, emoji, stickers, emails and forums.

Can I make a GIF from a YouTube video?

Not by pasting a link: the converter works on video files on your device, and it can't fetch videos from YouTube or other sites. Use clips you made or have the rights to.

Is my video uploaded?

No. The GIF is made inside your browser, so your video never leaves your device, and there's no watermark or sign-up.
