How to Use the Playback Speed Calculator
- Type the length into the box: 1h 30m, 1:30:00, 45:00 or just 90 for 90 minutes. Or tap a quick length (30m, 45m, 1h, 1h 30m or 2h).
- Watching on YouTube? Paste the video link instead and press Get length. The calculator pulls the exact length for you, including Shorts and live stream replays.
- Pick a playback speed from 0.25x to 4x, or type a custom speed like 1.6x.
- Read your watch time and time saved, plus a table with the watch time, time saved and percentage saved at 0.5x, 0.75x, 1.25x, 1.5x, 1.75x, 2x, 2.5x and 3x. Tap any row to switch to that speed.
- Short on time? Enter how long you have under Find the speed you need, and it shows the speed that gets you through in time.
Playback Speed Formula
Playback speed tells you how many seconds of video you get through every real second. At 1.5x you hear 1.5 seconds of video each second, so you divide the length by the speed:
Watch time = Original length ÷ Playback speedTime saved = Original length − Watch time% saved = (1 − 1 ÷ Playback speed) × 100Speed needed = Original length ÷ Time you haveFor example, a 60-minute video played at 1.5x takes 60 ÷ 1.5 = 40 minutes, which saves 20 minutes (33%). At 2x it takes 30 minutes, and at 0.5x it takes 120 minutes. To do it in your head, convert the length to minutes first: a 1 hour 30 minute video is 90 minutes, so at 1.5x it takes 90 ÷ 1.5 = 60 minutes.
To work backwards from the time you have, divide the length by that time. Getting through an 80-minute lecture in 50 minutes takes 80 ÷ 50 = 1.6x. If the answer falls between your player's speeds, round up, not down, or you'll run over: a 1-hour video in 45 minutes needs 1.33x, so pick 1.35x.

How Much Time Does Each Speed Save?
The percentage you save is the same for any length, so it's the easiest way to compare speeds. Here it is for every hour of video:
| Speed | 1 hour takes | Saved per hour | % saved |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0.5x | 2h | 1h extra | +100% |
| 0.75x | 1h 20m | 20m extra | +33% |
| 1.25x | 48m | 12m | 20% |
| 1.5x | 40m | 20m | 33% |
| 1.75x | 34m 17s | 25m 43s | 43% |
| 2x | 30m | 30m | 50% |
| 2.5x | 24m | 36m | 60% |
| 3x | 20m | 40m | 67% |
Notice that each step up saves less than the one before. Going from 1x to 1.5x saves 20 minutes an hour, but going from 1.5x to 2x only saves another 10, and 2x to 3x another 10. For most talking-head videos, 1.25x to 1.5x is the sweet spot: you still catch everything and save a fifth to a third of the time. Save 2x and above for content you already know well, and slow down for tutorials you follow step by step.
Works for Podcasts, Audiobooks, Lectures and Courses
The maths is the same for anything with a length. Type the length of a podcast episode, an audiobook, a recorded lecture or a whole online course into the calculator. A 10-hour audiobook at 1.5x takes 6h 40m, and a 12-hour course at 1.25x takes 9h 36m.
Where to change playback speed
YouTube on a computer
Click the gear icon (Settings) on the video, then Playback speed. Pick a preset from 0.25x to 2x, or choose Custom to set any speed in 0.05x steps. Shift + > speeds up and Shift + < slows down.
YouTube app (phone or tablet)
Tap the video, tap the gear icon, then Playback speed. You can also press and hold on the video to play at 2x until you let go. YouTube Premium members can go up to 4x.
Spotify podcasts and audiobooks
Open the episode or book on the Now Playing screen and tap the speed button (it shows 1x), then pick a speed.
Audible
In the player, tap the Speed control in the bottom-left corner and choose from 0.5x to 3.5x. To set a default for every book, go to Profile → Settings → Player → Narration Speed.
Online courses and lectures
Course players such as Udemy, Coursera and most university lecture recordings have a speed menu in the player bar, usually shown as 1x or under the gear icon.
Listening to an audiobook? The audiobook speed calculator also shows how much you have left and the day you'll finish, and works from a page count.
Got a whole playlist to get through? The playlist length calculator adds up every video and shows the total at each speed.
Frequently asked questions
How long is a 1 hour video at 1.5x speed?
40 minutes. At 1.5x you get through 1.5 minutes of video every minute, so 60 ÷ 1.5 = 40 minutes, which saves 20 minutes.
How long is a 1 hour video at 2x speed?
30 minutes. Doubling the speed halves the watch time: 60 ÷ 2 = 30 minutes, so you save 30 minutes.
How long is a 1 hour video at 1.25x speed?
48 minutes. 60 ÷ 1.25 = 48, which saves 12 minutes, or 20% of the time.
How long is a 1 hour video at 1.75x speed?
About 34 minutes 17 seconds. 60 ÷ 1.75 = 34.29 minutes, so you save about 25 minutes 43 seconds (43%).
How long is a 2 hour video at 1.5x speed?
1 hour 20 minutes. 120 minutes ÷ 1.5 = 80 minutes, which saves 40 minutes.
How long is a 4 hour video at 1.75x speed?
About 2 hours 17 minutes (2h 17m 9s). 240 minutes ÷ 1.75 = 137.14 minutes, so you save about 1 hour 43 minutes.
How long is 30 minutes at 2x speed?
15 minutes. 30 ÷ 2 = 15, so you save half the time.
How long is 25 minutes at 1.5x speed?
16 minutes 40 seconds. 25 ÷ 1.5 = 16.67 minutes, which saves 8 minutes 20 seconds.
How long is 18 minutes at 1.5x speed?
12 minutes. 18 ÷ 1.5 = 12, which saves 6 minutes.
How do I calculate watch time at a different playback speed?
Divide the length by the playback speed: watch time = length ÷ speed. For example, a 45-minute video at 1.5x takes 45 ÷ 1.5 = 30 minutes. It works the same for podcasts, audiobooks and online courses.
What speed do I need to finish a video in less time?
Divide the length by the time you have. An 80-minute lecture in 50 minutes needs 80 ÷ 50 = 1.6x. If the answer falls between your player's speeds, round up so you finish in time: a 1-hour video in 45 minutes needs 1.33x, so pick 1.35x with YouTube's Custom speed, or 1.5x from the presets.
